![]() Apple may not be doing any kind of wild 2-in-1 transforming design, or even pushing the concept of a touchscreen OS X device, but they have clearly tapped their immense experience with tablets in putting together the new MacBook. Though Apple’s device is distinctly a laptop in terms of form factor and design, you’d none the less be excused for mistaking it for a large form factor tablet if you took a look at its overall size and internal configuration, both of which are far closer to a tablet than a laptop. This brings us to today’s review and today’s launch of Apple’s latest ultra-thin laptop, the simply named MacBook. There are still some important differences between the devices, and this is a consequence of both current technological limitations as well as design differences, but clearly the point where traditional tablets end and traditional laptops end is no longer a well-defined one. The performance of tablets is continuing to improve through faster CPUs and unexpectedly powerful GPUs, all the while laptops and high-performance x86 tablets are getting thinner, lighter, and lower power. Or maybe it was the more recent release of Intel’s Core M family of CPUs, which brought the Core architecture to a sub-5W design for the first time while making the overall SoC thinner than ever before.īut either way you cut it, the line between tablets and laptops is blurrier than ever before. Perhaps it was Microsoft’s Surface Pro 3, which came out as an x86 Core architecture tablet that was finally thin enough to no longer be an awkward laptop without an attached keyboard. Although the app comes with a price tag, we feel that it is justified, especially if you fall in the aforementioned category.Įditors' note: This is a review of the trial version of Mellel for Mac 3.3.8.I’m still not entirely sure when it actually happened, but at some point over the last couple of years the crossover between tablets and laptops stopped being an idea and became a real thing. ![]() Mellel for Mac is best suited for students, academics, researchers, and other professionals that find themselves writing long papers containing a dozen text styles and hundreds of citations and references. ![]() When we tested the app's photo manipulation abilities, we found it to be lacking and not as fluid as Apple Pages. Not suited for everyday use: While you can use the app for less demanding work, we feel that its layout and lack of multimedia features don't make it the best choice out there. However, be prepared for some possible style inconsistencies. And if your colleagues are working with Word, you can still open and use the documents they send. There is also a very accessible option to switch the writing direction from right to left.Ĭollaboration-ready: If you're collaborating on your paper with someone else, you'll be happy to know that there is built-in support for tracking changes. You can choose a custom language in the app's preferences. International options: If you happen to be writing a document in another language, the app has got you covered. There is also support for character, paragraph, section, and page styles, including academic and professional ones that come preloaded with the app. ProsĪdvanced referencing and style options: The biggest claim to fame for Mellel for Mac is the degree to which you're allowed to use and keep track of references, citations, bookmarks, footnotes, author comments, etc. In addition to the excellent bibliography features, the app also comes with a self-updating table of contents, advanced style options, the ability to track changes, and support for a right-to-left writing direction. It comes with a free trial and features an elegant interface that is somewhat unconventional and might take a minute to get used to. ![]() ![]() Mellel for Mac lets professionals and academics write papers that contain a lot of citations, references, and footnotes. ![]()
